iPod Touch To Become VoIP Capable?

July 30th 2010

Lost in the iPad media blitz was its little brother, the iPod Touch. Nowhere near as powerful as the iPad but more media capable than the iPhone, the Touch occupies an uncertain niche for the Apple fanatic. The Touch works primarily, through a powerful GUI, as a personal digital media player with WiFi capabilities. Of course, the iPad quickly superseded the Touch, which was a stepping stone.

But now the Touch might find a new lease on life if a rumor reported on the CNET website is true.

According to the report, Yoison, a Chinese tech company, had developed a small cradle for the Touch that gives it iPhone-like calling capabilities over WiFi using a VoIP provider (such as Skype). The cradle wraps around the Touch like a protective case and carries its own battery and processor. The SRP is thought to be well under $100. Essentially, you’d have an iPhone for a modest price.

This is yet another example of the power of VoIP technology—any WiFi-capable device with a microphone and speaker is now potentially a source for inexpensive telephony. For this reason, the expansion of VoIP phones in the consumer marketplace mirrors its growing adoption in the business segment.
